‘The current situation is unacceptable’ says the Agency in this 52-page report – Agency suggests consultations start immediately

THE International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) today called for the creation of a “safe zone” to prevent a nuclear accident at Ukraine’s Zaporizhia plant, which has been under Russian occupation since last March.

“The current situation is unacceptable,” says the Organization in this 52-page report, which it released today. “There is an urgent need to take temporary measures” to prevent an accident due to damage that could be caused by military means, he continued, calling for “a nuclear safety and protection zone to be established.”

The Agency’s experts say they are ready to immediately start consultations on the creation of this zone, noting that they are “gravely concerned” about the situation in Zaporizhia.

International Atomic Energy Agency experts, in their report on the situation at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, say they found damage in some parts of it and recommended that conditions be improved for Ukrainian workers who remain there and operate the plant.

“Ukrainian workers operating the Russian military-held plant are under constant pressure, particularly due to the limited staff available,” the IAEA says. “This situation is not sustainable and could lead to human error, with consequences for nuclear safety,” the report emphasizes.
