The Kremlin has warned the move could lead to a breakdown in bilateral relations.
The US government does not plan to include Russia in the list of states that it considers to support terrorism, John Kirby, the head of strategic communications of the US presidency’s National Security Council, confirmed yesterday.
He made the statement the day after President Joe Biden’s one-word negative response to a reporter’s question about whether such a thing was planned.
The Kremlin has warned the move could lead to a breakdown in bilateral relations.
“We think it’s not the best, most efficient and most effective way to continue to hold Russia accountable” for the war in Ukraine, Mr. Kerby told reporters.
“We didn’t dismiss it lightly. We have seriously studied it,” he added.
According to the SEA representative, the possible effects of this designation were studied, discussed with experts and the conclusion was reached that the move would hinder the efforts of non-governmental organizations to provide humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
Consideration was also given to the possibility that the move would negatively affect Ukraine’s position at the negotiating table with Russia whenever they take place, Mr Kerby added.
Recently, Latvia’s parliament declared Russia a state sponsor of terrorism. Kyiv has been calling on Washington to do the same. American parliamentarians exerted pressure for this.
Syria, Iran, North Korea and Cuba are currently on the list of countries that, according to the US, support terrorism. They face US sanctions that hit development aid, arms exports and their financial sector.
