A Midsummer Night’s Dream 2030 Equality Plan – It will take at least 140 years to achieve gender equality in positions of power and in the workplace
Discrimination, positions of responsibility, standard of living… At the current rate, it will take about 300 years to achieve equality between men and women, points out the UNconsidering that successive crises are exacerbating gender discrimination.
“At the current rate of progress (…) it will take 286 years to fill the gaps in legal protection and elimination of discrimination,” note UN Women and United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA). Humanity will also need to wait up to 140 years “until women are equally represented in positions of power and leadership in the workplace and at least 40 years for their equal representation in national parliaments.
The UN has set itself the goal of achieving gender equality by 2030.
“Global challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic and its consequences, violent conflict, climate change and negative attitudes towards women’s sexual health and reproductive rights are further exacerbating inequalities,” the two organizations note in the their announcement.
At the end of it 2022 an estimated 383 million women and girls will live in extreme poverty, on less than $1.90 a day. The corresponding figure for men is estimated at 368 million, the statement continues, noting as alarming the reversal of the world’s poverty reduction trend.
Today, there are more displaced women and girls than ever before. More than 1.2 billion women and girls of reproductive age live in countries where abortion restrictions apply. “It is critical that we come together now to invest in women and girls to accelerate the progress that has been made,” commented Seema Bachus, the executive director of UN Women. “The data unequivocally show the retreat of their rights, in terms of income, security, education, health. The longer we delay in reversing this trend, the higher the cost will be for all of us,” he added.
