Biden warns Putin: Economic sanctions if it takes military action against Ukraine

by

US President Joe Biden will warn his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin of the serious economic consequences Russia will suffer if it launches an invasion of Ukraine, a US government official said today.

Presidents Biden and Putin will speak by video call tomorrow, at a time when the United States is trying to prevent Russia from taking military action against Ukraine after Moscow rallied tens of thousands of troops on the Ukrainian border.

The US official, who briefed reporters ahead of the two leaders’ communication, said the US was working with its European allies to give a strong response in the event of an invasion. He stressed that the US and Europe will impose severe economic sanctions.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken plans to speak by telephone today with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and Biden will speak to him in the coming days, he added.

Biden will also speak today with his European allies ahead of tomorrow’s meeting with Putin.

The United States does not know if Putin has decided on a military escalation in Ukraine, but he has the ability to do so, he added, according to Reuters. He insisted that the United States did not seek a confrontation with Russia but would, if necessary, impose substantial consequences for harmful actions.

Biden intends to encourage Putin to return to talks through diplomatic means, including the Minsk agreement.

The United States will support the launch of talks between NATO and Russia to address concerns on both sides. Washington also does not believe that the “red lines” debate is useful and will not work on that logic.

The US president also intends to discuss Iran’s nuclear program with Putin.

The Kremlin compares the situation in Russia-US relations with the dung of Augeia

Many issues have accumulated in the relations between Russia and the USA and the cleaning of the dung of Augeia within a few hours of talks is doubtful. This view was expressed by the representative of the Russian President Dmitry Peshkov in an interview with the First Channel of Russian television.

“It is very difficult to expect progress from the talks. “We have such a huge dung of Augeia at the moment in our bilateral relations that it is doubtful that you can clear it within a few hours of talks,” Peshkov said, commenting on the upcoming talks between the presidents of Russia and the United States. The Kremlin spokesman said: “I hope that the leaders will be able to convey their concerns to each other, to articulate clearly to each other and to respond to them.”
