Balmoral Castle, the Queen’s Scottish summer residence where she is currently under medical supervision, is one of her favorite spots, according to British media.
Every summer she travels to the property 50 miles from the city of Aberdeen, Balmoral, with her family members.
Generally, the queen stays at the castle from August to October. This year, she went on July 21, and it was there that she swore in Liz Truss as prime minister — the first time in her reign that she had held the hearing in Scotland.
The castle has been in the family for generations since 1852, when it was purchased by Prince Albert as a gift to Queen Victoria.
According to the British newspaper The Guardian, Princess Eugenie, the Queen’s granddaughter, once described Balmoral as a “lovely base for grandma and grandpa” and a place to “have room to breathe and run”.
“Rides, picnics, dogs — lots of dogs, there are always dogs — and people coming and going all the time,” she said.
Family barbecues were often held there, with the late Prince Phillip, Elizabeth’s husband, cooking and the Queen doing the dishes.
After their wedding in 1947, they spent part of their honeymoon at Birkhall, a hunting lodge on the estate.
According to the Guardian, the Queen was staying there with her grandchildren William and Harry when their mother, the Princess of Wales, died in Paris in 1997.
At Balmoral, the royals “act like normal people — up to a point,” said Lord Lichfield, a former family photographer, in 1972. “Lunch is always outdoors and they’re out there every day on expeditions. .”
