The launch took place in the early hours of Thursday with an Ariane 5 rocket from the European space station Kourou in French Guiana, South America. The satellite, built by aerospace company Thales Alenia Space and eventually placed in geostationary orbit at an altitude of 36,000 kilometers, will provide high-speed broadband and in-flight connections across Europe on behalf of Eutelsat.
The launch of the new satellite was the 114th mission of Europe’s Ariane 5 rocket since its maiden flight in 1996.
The rocket will make three more flights before being succeeded by Ariane 6, which will take over Europe’s heavy-lift launches.
