Seven dead from Russian bombings in Idlib

The Observatory said a quarry and a house west of Idlib city were hit, without giving further details.

Seven people, including civilians, were killed and 15 others wounded today by Russian strikes in Idlib province, the last major rebel and jihadist stronghold in Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.

At least four of the victims were civilians.

The Observatory said a quarry and a house west of Idlib city were hit, without giving further details.

An AFP photojournalist said he saw a large plume of smoke rising from the quarry as well as ambulances carrying victims.

A part of Idlib province and parts of the neighboring provinces of Hama, Aleppo and Lattakia are controlled by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the former branch of al-Qaeda in Syria. A ceasefire has been in place since March 2020, following an operation by the Syrian regime that displaced around 1 million people. Despite its repeated violations, the truce is generally observed.

Clashes between Kurds and jihadists

The Syrian Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said today that two of its fighters were killed in clashes with jihadists in a displaced persons camp.

“Two of our fighters succumbed to their injuries after clashes” with Islamic State members in al-Hol overnight, the Arab-Kurdish coalition said. According to this source, two women as well as five men dressed as women were involved in the attack against the SDF fighters. One of the jihadists was killed and six others were wounded.

Al-Hol camp is under the command of the SDF. It is less than 10 kilometers from the border with Iraq and is home to around 56,000 people, Syrian IDPs and Iraqi refugees. Among them are 10,000 foreigners, mainly relatives of IS jihadists. This is the largest camp of displaced people who left their homes after IS lost its last stronghold in Syria.

The semi-autonomous Kurdish administration launched an operation last month to track down jihadists hiding in the camp after they resumed attacks. The US-led coalition fighting IS said on Wednesday that “dozens of members” of the Islamic State group had been captured and the group’s main networks dismantled. On September 5, the SDF freed four women living in the camp who were found inside tunnels, chained and tortured by IS supporters.
