She was the British sovereign with whom individuals all over the world felt an immediate personal connection — whether listening to her on the radio when she was still a young princess, talking to the children of the UK, or gathering around their TVs to watch. her coronation, or watching her latest Christmas speech or Platinum Jubilee on their cell phones. And she, in turn, dedicated her entire life to serving her people.

Michelle and I were lucky enough to have met Her Majesty, and she meant a lot to us. When we were just beginning to navigate life as President and First Lady, she welcomed us with open arms and extraordinary generosity. We were often surprised by her tenderness, by the way she put everyone at ease, and how she displayed her considerable charm and humor even in moments of great pomp and circumstance.

Queen Elizabeth led England skillfully through difficult times, with the confidence of her people and hope for a brighter future. The world has benefited from her determined ways, and we are grateful for her decades of service as a sovereign. Americans in particular showed their firm and serene friendship.
