The monarch was walking in the hills near Balmoral when two American tourists who were hiking approached her and one of them caught her conversation, said her former bodyguard, Richard “Dick” Griffin.
The hiker asked the Queen where she lived, she replied in London, adding that she also has a cottage behind the hill and has been visiting the area since she was a little girl, over 80 years. She didn’t explain to him that the ‘cottage’ was Balmoral Castle. But he, knowing that Balmoral was nearby, asked her if she had ever met the… queen.
“I don’t, but Dick from here often meets her,” she answered.
The hiker then turned to the bodyguard and asked him how the queen was in character.
“Because I’ve been around her a long time and I know I can tease her, I said, ‘Oh, she’s awkward sometimes, but she’s got an amazing sense of humor.’
Excited, the hiker put his hand on Griffin’s shoulders and asked the queen to…take a picture of them. She, very obligingly, took the camera and photographed them. Griffin then took another photo, with the Queen in the middle of the two hikers.
Elizabeth later told him: “I should like to be a fly on the wall when he shows this picture to his friends in America and, I hope, someone will tell him who I am.”
