The first day of a new era has dawned in the United Kingdom following the death of Queen Elizabeth on Thursday afternoon after 70 years and seven months on the throne.
The country is in a state of national mourning until the day after her funeral longest-lived monarch in its history.
The pre-arranged ceremony that will culminate in the final farewell to the 96-year-old monarch and the full assumption of duties by the new King Charles III will begin with the arrival in London from Balmoral of the King and Queen-consort Camilla.
Today’s program of the 73-year-old Charles includes the first meeting with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Liz Truss and a televised address to the British people. His official coronation as monarch by the Enthronement Council has been postponed until Saturday.
During Friday Ms Trass and leading ministers will attend a service in memory of Queen Elizabeth which will be held at St Paul’s Cathedral. Later, the government is expected to determine the date of the funeral, a day that will be declared a holiday and a Day of National Mourning.
The details of the funeral and the ritual of the coming days will be approved by the new king in a meeting with the relevant royal official.
At the same time today, from 12 noon to 10 pm local, there will be an extraordinary sitting of the House of Commons and the House of Lords so that MPs and Lords can pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth and share personal stories with her and memories.
A session with the same content will be held on Saturday, when the MPs will also take an oath of allegiance to the new king.
Also on Friday, 96 cannons will be fired, one for each year of Queen Elizabeth’s life, while churches have been asked to ring their bells by a Church of England circular.
The recommendation made to the churches by the Central Council of Bell Ringers is to ring the bells for one hour from 12 noon onwards.
