Queen Elizabeth II died on Thursday at the age of 96, after the longest reign in British history. She was born in 1926 and ascended to the throne in 1952, in a reign that spanned the Cold War to the Covid-19 pandemic. The queen died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, where she spent the summer.
Elizabeth is succeeded by the eldest son, Charles III, who is not as popular as his mother. He assumes the crown at a troubled time for Britain, which is facing an energy crisis caused by the war in Ukraine, a rising inflation rate and which this week underwent a change of prime minister.
In this Friday’s episode (9), Café da Manhã brings the story of the columnist Sheet Marina Izidro, who, from London, reports the reaction of the British to the death of the monarch. The podcast also talks with the professor of international politics at UFMG and visiting researcher at the University of Oxford Dawisson Belém Lopes about what has changed in the British monarchy since the rise of Elizabeth II and what the reign of Charles III should be like.
The audio program is published on Spotify, partner streaming service of Sheet in the initiative and who specializes in music, podcast and video. You can listen to the episode by clicking above. To access the app, simply register for free.
