Prince William: The new heir to the throne and a born king

by

Popular royal couple William and Kate (the future Queen) also changed their social media profiles to Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge.

New heir to the throne – now that his father has become king – is the prince William. THE future king of Britain automatically also inherited the title of the former Prince Charles, Duke of Cornwall and carries it along with his own Duke of Cambridge.

In fact, the popular princely couple William and Kate (the future queen) also changed their social media profiles to Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge.

“I think most people think William and Kate will make a good team and be excellent as king and queen,” says royal writer Phil Dampier.

A born king

Ever since he was born on June 21, 1982, William Arthur Philip Louis Mountbatten Windsor was destined to be king.

William has grown acutely aware of his future responsibilities and has increased his royal duties since his brother Harry and uncle Andrew abdicated royal titles for different reasons.

And as the new king ages, William will have a much stronger public presence in preparation for his later role as king, says Robert Hazell, a professor at University College London.

“William will need to shoulder a greater burden, so I have no doubt that he will take on an ever-increasing share of royal responsibilities,” he told AFP.

William, 40, has so far managed to keep his private life out of the public eye, taking on political and military duties and tending to the three children he has with wife Catherine, roles that have proved popular with the public.

William and Harry

Harry – the ‘back-up’ to William’s ‘successor’ – was born two years later.

However, both siblings had the same treatment in terms of their education—first nannies and then boarding school from the age of eight.

He was only ten when his parents separated, leading to their divorce in 1996, and 15 when his mother Diana was killed in a car accident in 1997.

The image of the two boys at their mother’s funeral walking with bowed heads through the streets of London following her coffin is etched in the collective memory.

The siblings always spoke warmly of their mother and at a younger age William with his blond hair looked remarkably like her.

William has described a scene with their mother driving them to the first day of school and singing Tina Turner’s hit “(Simply) The Best” to cheer them up.

He also defended her when an inquiry in 2021 found that the BBC had tricked her into agreeing to the 1995 television interview in which she revealed she had had an extramarital affair.

He had also not hesitated to respond directly to a question about his brother Harry’s allegations of racist behavior by the Palace. “We are in no way a racist family,” he told reporters.

Music and football

William has yet to publicly respond to Harry’s claim that his brother and their father are “trapped” in tradition.

But it is clear that he likes to appear as someone who will ensure the future survival of the monarchy.

He has given few in-depth interviews and he and his wife, an amateur photographer, have tried to control their narrative through social media.

The family’s 2021 Christmas card showed the couple in a relaxed pose outdoors in Jordan, resting a hand on each other’s knee.

He has spoken of his diverse tastes in music—from English band Coldplay to Australian hard rock AC/DC.

Despite attending the elite Eton College, he became an Aston Villa fan, choosing the Birmingham football club because “I wanted to be a fan of a team in the middle of the table because that way I can enjoy more emotional moments”.

In 2006 he became the president of the Football Association and often watches the matches of the English team but at the same time he is also involved in more “noble” sports such as horse polo and duck hunting.

William and the then Kate Middleton met at Scotland’s St Andrews University and their relationship began when he spotted her during a university fashion show she was attending.

The couple married in 2011.

William became a search and rescue helicopter pilot in the Royal Air Force, where he remained for three years living in a farmhouse in rural north-west Wales with Kate and their first child, George.

His profile has been upgraded

The family then moved to Norfolk, in the east of England, where William took up a role as an air ambulance pilot in 2015. As he has said, the role gave him some traumatic experiences trying to help people who were “on the brink of death”.

In 2017, William left his job to devote himself exclusively to his royal duties between London and Norfolk, at the royal country house of Sandringham.

During the lockdown due to the pandemic, William had stated that together with Kate they had taken on the school obligations of their two eldest children, George and Charlotte, and helped them with the difficulties they faced with maths.

Since Queen Elizabeth’s health began to decline, William’s role has been strengthened: his brother Harry stepped down from his royal duties and their uncle Prince Andrew lost his privileges due to his involvement in a sexual assault scandal in the US.
