Coronavirus – South Korea: 64 deaths – Over 4,900 cases in 24 hours

South Korean health authorities announced today that 4,954 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed in the 24 hours until midnight Monday and another 64 patients died due to complications of COVID-19.

The death toll from the new coronavirus pandemic in the Asian country has so far reached 3,957 deaths out of a total of 482,310 infections. The mortality rate remains at 0.82%.

The daily death toll is the second heaviest since the pandemic struck in South Korea in January 2020. The previous tragic record of 70 deaths was announced on Saturday.

The cases of the new Omicron variant of the virus that have been detected have reached 36 (+12 in 24 hours). The 27 were due to transmission in the community.

The number of infections increased from the previous one (4,325). It is the highest recorded any Monday since the outbreak of the pandemic.

The number of patients with severe symptoms of the disease increased to 774 (+47 in 24 hours). This is a record.

Since the mass immunization campaign began on 26 February, 42.73 million people (83.2% of the 52 million population) have received the first dose of vaccine, of which 41.41 million (80.6%) have received the vaccine. fully vaccinated, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA). Some 4.24 million citizens (8.3%) have received booster doses.
