A national day of mourning has been established to honor a person of particular importance to the country who recently passed away.

The last major period of national mourning in Britain was held in 2005 in honor of the 52 people who died in the July 7 terrorist attacks in London.

During the 10 days of mourning, flags are flown at half-staff and condolences are paid at British embassies around the world.
