A Kenyan police officer killed six people in the Kenyan capital Nairobi today and then committed suicide, according to police.
The officer first killed his wife at their home before taking to the streets with his AK-47 service weapon and killing five other people, according to a police report.
Police did not specify what caused the massacre.
“The policeman (…) started firing, killing five people, including two motorcyclists, one of whom succumbed to his injuries while receiving first aid,” police said in a statement.
Francis Wahom, Nairobi’s Dagoretti police chief, confirmed the death toll but did not elaborate.
Angry residents in the area later set fire to tires protesting the massacre, according to an eyewitness quoted by Reuters.
In 2010, a police officer in the city of Chicago, located 120 kilometers northeast of Nairobi, killed 10 people, including two colleagues.
A police spokesman had said at the time that the officer had tried to commit suicide after the massacre, but had no other bullets and was forced to surrender to police.
