Ukrainian troops outnumbered Russian eight times, says Russian-appointed official in Kharkiv

The Ukrainian army announced this morning that within 24 hours recaptured “more than 20 locations” as part of its counter-offensive against the Russian army, while a Russian-appointed official in Kharkiv claimed that Ukrainian forces in their counter-attack were eight times the size of the Russians.

“The liberation of locations from the Russian occupiers continues in the regions of Kharkiv (Kharkov) and Donetsk”, in eastern Ukraine, the army announced in its morning report. On the entire front line, “Ukrainian forces managed to drive out the enemy from more than 20 locations” within 24 hours, he added.

“During their retreat, Russian troops are hastily abandoning their positions and fleeing,” the army further assured in the same report.

Ukraine claims that since the beginning of September it has recaptured approximately 3,000 square kilometers of its territory, mainly in the Kharkiv region.

Yesterday, Sunday, in the evening, in the regions of eastern, northern, southern and central Ukraine there were major power outages, which the Ukrainian authorities attributed to Russian strikes. Near Kharkiv, thermal power station number 5, the second largest in the country, was affected, according to the presidency.

Power was quickly restored in some of the affected areas. In the Kharkiv region, “80%” of electricity and water supply has been restored, Ukrainian presidential official Kirill Tymoshenko said this morning.

Meanwhile, a Russian-appointed official in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, Vitaly Gadchev, claimed today that Ukrainian forces during the Ukrainian blitzkrieg in the region were eight times larger than Russian and pro-Russian forces.

Speaking to state broadcaster Rossiya-24, Gadchev said Ukrainian forces had captured Russian-held locations in the northern regions of the region, opening a path to the border with Russia, and that “about 5,000” civilians had been evacuated to Russia.

Gadchev said “the situation is getting more difficult by the hour” and added that the border with Russia’s Belgorod region is now closed.

Reuters says it was not immediately able to confirm reports from the battlefield.
