The cap on natural gas will not solve Europe’s problem, says the Norwegian prime minister

The energy ministers of EU member states, who met on Friday in Brussels, favored taking a series of measures to put a brake on the explosive growth of electricity and gas bills.

THE Norway, which has now become the largest supplier natural gas for Europe in Russia’s position, he is “cautionary” about enforcement ceiling on its priceas proposed by many EU member countries, said today Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gar Stere.

“We agree to have an even closer dialogue with the EU in the future regarding the various proposals that are on the table,” Stere said in a statement released after his phone call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

“We are approaching the talks with an open mind, but we are cautious about imposing a maximum price on natural gas. Imposing a cap will not change anything to the fundamental problem, which is that there is too little gas in Europe,” he noted.

The energy ministers of EU member states, who met on Friday in Brussels, favored taking a series of measures to put a brake on the explosive growth of electricity and gas bills. Some are calling for a cap on the price of gas imported into the EU. Although the Commission has proposed a cap on gas coming from Russia, many countries such as Italy are taking the view of capping all gas imports, including and liquefied (LNG).

Norway, which has benefited from the price increase, has so far avoided taking a position on the cap and referred the issue to the oil companies that negotiate the contracts. Norway recently overtook Russia to become Europe’s biggest natural gas supplier as its own deliveries rose 8%, while those from Moscow fell.
