Demonstrators also booed King Charles, holding placards that read ‘You are not my king’, ‘Abolish the monarchy’ and ‘End feudalism’

Police Scotland have announced that they have made three arrests in Edinburgh for disturbing the peace yesterday and today, while the body of Queen Elizabeth was being transportedt from Holyroodhouse Palace to the city’s Cathedral.

A 22-year-old woman, who was seen holding a placard with anti-monarchy slogans, and a 74-year-old man were arrested in separate incidents on Sunday. Today a 22-year-old man was arrested during the procession on the Royal Mile, Edinburgh’s main street.

Earlier, in footage of the procession, which was followed by King Charles and his siblings, a man to harass Prince Andrewuntil someone else pulls him out of the crowd and then police intervene and remove him.

In the morning, two anti-monarchical protestors booed Charles, while heading to Parliament. Holding placards reading ‘You are not my king’, ‘Abolish the monarchy’ and ‘End feudalism’, the protesters stood on the pavement opposite Westminster. One of them approached the railings of parliament, but was removed by police, according to the Evening Standard newspaper.

“This is a political space, it’s a political day,” one of the protesters told AFP, requesting anonymity. “Parliament accepts Charles Windsor as the new head of state, without the people having a say. He is king without consent, it is not fair. We don’t know what he does, but he earns a salary of £24 million a year. Why; To greet and shake hands,” he added.

Elizabeth’s death has caused a stir in the UK and hundreds of thousands of people are expected to take part in a public procession to her body at the end of the week in London. However, some dissenting voices were also heard, mainly denouncing the colonial legacy of the British monarchy. According to a poll conducted in June to mark Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee, more than 6 in 10 Britons (62%) want the country to remain a monarchy and only 22% want an elected head of state.
