The Italian actress Gina Lollombrizita, a candidate, at the age of 95, in the September 25 parliamentary elections, today underwent a successful operation in Rome after she fell and suffered a fractured femur.

The former sex symbol, who rose to fame in 1952 with Christian-Jacques’ The Knight and the Gypsy, collapsed at her home on Sunday and was taken to hospital.

“The operation went very well, it was absolutely successful. She woke up and is under (medical) observation,” said her lawyer, Antonio Ingroia.

Lollobrigida is running for the Senate with the “Sovereign and Popular Italy” alliance which, according to opinion polls, will not exceed the 3% threshold to elect representatives to parliament. The alliance, which includes the Communist and Socialist parties, is in favor of Italy’s exit from the EU and NATO and calls for an end to military aid to Ukraine and the lifting of sanctions against Russia. He also opposes compulsory vaccination.

Lollobrigida co-starred in dozens of films with the biggest stars of Hollywood and Italian cinema, from Frank Sinatra and Sean Connery to Marcello Mastroianni and Humphrey Bogart. He returned to Italy in 1962 and has since made only sporadic appearances in film and television. She then devoted herself to her first artistic loves, photography and sculpture.
