Portuguese justice has opened an investigation into the case of classified documents sent by NATO to Portugal, which were found for sale online after a cyber attack targeting the general staff of the country’s armed forces, prosecutors said today.

“We confirm the launch of an investigation to be led by the prosecution of the Central Department of Investigation and Criminal Action (DCIAP),” a spokesman for the prosecution told AFP.

The reaction of Portuguese justice came after the information published on Thursday by the newspaper Diario de Noticias, according to which hundreds of secret documents sent by NATO to Portugal were found for sale on the dark web.

The theft of the documents followed a hack “perpetrated by bots programmed to detect these types of documents”, targeting the general staff of the armed forces and the military’s Intelligence services, according to the Portuguese newspaper.

Always according to Diario de Noticias, the incident was noticed by the American Intelligence services, which informed the Portuguese authorities in August through the American embassy in Lisbon.

An investigation by Portugal’s cyber security services identified the armed forces’ general staff, the army’s intelligence service and an agency of the defense ministry as targets of the attack, the newspaper said.

In response to a question from AFP, Prime Minister Antonio Costa’s office repeated the answer it had given to the newspaper, underlining that the government is working “so that the credibility of Portugal, as a founding member of the Atlantic Alliance, remains intact.”

“Every time there is a suspected breach (…) the situation is analyzed in depth” and steps are taken to “strengthen cybersecurity awareness,” the Portuguese government added, without confirming or denying the theft of the documents.
