Experts have long suspected that the British playwright collaborated on many of his plays. New research analyzes how this might have happened
Up to a third of his plays William Shakespeare they may have been co-written with the collaboration of other authors, according to new analysis.
As reported in an article by the Daily Mail, experts have long suspected that the British Theatrical writer collaborated on many of his projects. Now a new research, which uses innovative language analysis techniquesanalyzes how this might have happened.
From the evidence it appears that works such as Titus Andronicus and Pericles may have co-signed them George Peel and George Wilkins respectively.
Also other works may have been started by other writers and finished by Shakespeare.
For example, according to the analysis, some of the first scenes of “Henry VI” were probably written by Christopher Marlowe.
The analysis focuses on linguistic “fingerprints”, that is, the different way each of us uses language. All writers have them, and these determine how often they will use a word and the likelihood that it will appear with others.
Thus experts discovered that many acts in works attributed exclusively to Shakespeare had a greater similarity to the writing style of other authors.
Speaking at the British Science Festival in Leicester, Professor Gabriel Egan, from De Montfort University, said his analysis suggests that Shakespeare may have written much more than previously thought, but he added that some of those believed to have been written by him they were not exclusively his.
“Working in the theater, he must have read other people’s plays and in many cases sat down with them and said ‘let’s do a play. He is a more social writer than we thought,” the professor emphasized.
“It is a great surprise that these works (such as Henry VI) are the product of collaboration. “Something like a third of Shakespeare’s plays are actually the result of collaboration with other writers,” he concluded
