At least nine people were killed and 20 others injured early Thursday morning in Guatemala when they were trampled at the end of a concert celebrating the country’s independence anniversary.
As the Guatemalan Red Cross announced on Twitter, its members and volunteer firefighters provided first aid to more than 20 injured people. Nine people were killed on the spot” in the city of Quetzaltenango, about 200 kilometers west of Guatemala City.
Local media reported that the victims were trampled as thousands of people tried to leave the area at the end of the concert.
The accident occurred in an open square during “Selafer”, a traditional event for the country’s independence.
Guatemala restarted this year the celebrations for the independence of the country and the rest of Central America from Spain, after having banned them for two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
