Italy’s electoral system favors broad coalitions. The result of this fact is the election of more than 60 prime ministers in the last 70 years.

The “Brothers of Italy” they are still taking advantage of the “advantage” they gained from not being part of his coalition government Mario Draghi. Nine days before the polls open in the neighboring country, Georgia Meloni reaches almost 25% in polls. Italian analysts argue that Matteo Salvini’s “Lega” (12.5%) and Silvio Berlusconi’s “Forza Italia” (8%) who had supported the national unity government of the former ECB president “paid” for their choice. The 45-year-old former far-right activist from Rome has been helped by the fact that in recent years the conservative instincts of many Italians have mutated, been influenced by xenophobic positions and followed a wave of populism.

While the far-right coalition reaches almost 45% and is considered unlikely to lose power, the center-left alliance falls significantly behind. After all, the country’s electoral system favors broad alliances. The result of this fact is the election of more than 60 prime ministers in the last 70 years.

Enrico Leta’s Democratic Party is recorded at around 22%. The collaboration of the Greens and the Italian Left barely reaches 4%, the “More Europe” party is at 2% and the formation of former finance minister Luigi Di Maio at around 1%. Georgia Meloni has largely “rounded” her positions following the example of Marine Le Pen. The more moderate stance combined with the hostility to immigration that remains, the conspiracy theories and the antipathy he brought out in the recent debate towards the E.U. they finally give them the extra points they want. He does not adopt the intense anti-Europeanism of Salvini, knowing that extremes must be avoided. Nevertheless, when asked by Italy’s EURACTIV if she could see a possible alliance of the EPP group with the ID (Salvini belongs to the European Parliament) and the ECR (the Brothers of Italy belong), as it happens in Italy, Metzola replied: “No you can work with extremists. You cannot cooperate with those who want to destroy Europe.” The necessary consultations and program directions will be made when and if the government coalition is called to be formed.

How random could it be the fact that after the war in Ukraine in Hungary, France and Sweden the far-right parties had big electoral gains? The forces of populism want to take advantage of this wave in Italy as well. There is no doubt that the sanctions imposed on Russia and the consequences of the wave of accuracy they gave fertile ground to the extreme right to spread its nets.

It is recalled that according to the constitutional reform approved in the current parliamentary term, the number of deputies and senators in Italy was reduced by 1/3. On September 25, 400 deputies and 200 senators will be elected. With the data so far from the opinion polls, the formation of the right wing is estimated to secure approximately 240 seats, the center-left alliance close to 100 and the rest are distributed among the “Five Stars”, the coalition of Renzi – Calenda et al.
