Pasquale Avalone thought it was over when the water flooded his house and reached his neck. “The front door came off its hinges and the water stuck me to the wall. I managed to climb into a cupboard and I was waiting for my death,” said the 30-year-old man, still shocked by the disaster that claimed the lives of ten people. He struggles to hold back tears as he picks up his son’s muddy toys and throws them into a pile of furniture on Via Pianolo di Ostra. Four people lost their lives on this road.

“I didn’t have many things, now I have nothing left, only a drowned parrot” continues Pasquale, hands and feet covered in mud.

Residents with brooms try to remove the water from their houses and clean, as best they can, their personal belongings. The weathermen are predicting more rains and everyone is looking anxiously at the clouds gathering in the sky.

“It was like a whirlwind“, says Bruno Ferri, a 52-year-old man who helps his neighbor collect the dresses of her six-year-old daughter, who is suffering from cancer. The child’s medicines were the only thing the woman managed to save from the waters. “It was scary because everything happened so fast. It sounded like a waterfall, we could hear the river overflowing and the water rising,” said Laura Marinelli, a lawyer who lives on the ground floor of a building in Ostra.

“I grabbed my one-and-a-half-year-old daughter by the hand and we fled to the neighbors upstairs. Finally, members of the civil protection service came and removed us» from the roof, the woman narrates. “We lost everything, all the photos and letters we can’t replace. If it had happened a little later, we would have fallen asleep and probably died“, she continued, pointing with her finger to the roof where she climbed together with her husband and daughter to escape the waters.

On the side of the road, piled on top of each other, cars swept away by the waters. There is a strong smell of sewage and fuel everywhere. There is no drinking water and residents can do nothing but wait for rescue crews.

“If the state doesn’t intervene quickly, there will be a revolution,” warns Pasquale Avellone’s brother-in-law, Marco. The government declared Marche a state of emergency and released a first aid package of 5 million euros.
