The US Justice Department today appealed a court order blocking the review of classified documents seized by the FBI in a search of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago, Florida, mansion.
The US Justice Department is underscoring that a decision barring prosecutors from relying on classified documents in the criminal investigation into the retention of government records at Trump’s residence after the Republican tycoon’s presidency ends should be suspended.
The Justice Department is also asking that independent Judge Raymond Deary not be allowed to review the classified material. Raymond Deary, 78, was appointed by Judge Eileen Cannon to take a special role in the case. Its mission is to decide whether certain records should remain “outside the jurisdiction” of researchers.
About 100 classified documents are among the 11,000 files seized by the FBI during the Aug. 8 search of Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago mansion.
Judge Eileen Cannon, a Trump appointee in 2020, has said she would ask Deary to prioritize reviewing classified records in the investigation, which he must complete by Nov. 30.
