With the traditional three taps and the exclamation “O’zapft is”, at 12 noon the mayor of Munich opened the first keg of beer.
The most famous beer festival in the world, Oktoberfest, started today in Munich and will last until Monday, October 3rd. The famous festival opened its gates (and barrels) after two years as it was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
With the traditional three taps and the exclamation “O’zapft is”, at 12 noon Munich mayor Didier Reiter opened the first keg of beer and offered the first glass to the Bavarian prime minister.

Although it is strictly forbidden to serve beer before 12 o’clock, nevertheless the “gobblers” had rushed under the big tents and had taken their seats at least 3 hours earlier.

Oktoberfest brings in around 1.2 billion euros. The last time it was organized, in 2019, its 6.3 million visitors consumed more than 7.3 million liters of German beer. In its 200 years of history, it has been canceled only 26 times, mainly due to the two world wars but also twice due to an outbreak of cholera.
