Reaction after the announcement that her husband, actor Maxim Galkin, is on the list of foreign agents
Russian singer Alla Pugacheva, the queen of Soviet pop music and a superstar of Russian variety shows for decades, today denounced the conflict in Ukraine, saying soldiers are being killed “for illusory goals” as the Kremlin moves to crack down on criticism.
On her Instagram account, which is followed by nearly 3.5 million people, 73-year-old Alla Pugacheva reacted to the announcement on Friday that her husband, actor Maxim Galkin, was included in the notorious list of “foreign agents” in Russia.
“I ask you to rank me among the foreign agents of my beloved country,” wrote Alla Pugacheva in her message, which is addressed to the Russian Ministry of Justice.
“Because I am in solidarity with my husband, an honest, wholesome and honest man, a true Russian patriot, incorruptible, who wants his Motherland to prosper and live in peace,” she said.
According to her, her husband wants in Russia “freedom of expression and the end of the death of our boys for illusory goals, which make our country a pariah and the life of our citizens more difficult”, she continued.
Maxim Galkin, who openly criticized the military campaign in Ukraine, is abroad.
Alla Pugacheva has been the queen of Russian-speaking pop since the Soviet period and is still considered one of the most famous singers of the former USSR.
Until now he had not publicly mentioned the conflict. However, Russian media reported that he had left Russia after the attack began.
He recently passed through Moscow again and was seen on September 3 at the funeral of the last Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, who had attempted in the 1980s to introduce democratic reforms.
The Russian authorities have punished any criticism of the invasion of Ukraine with thousands of fines, as well as prison terms. Russian artists, who denounced the conflict, saw their concerts canceled in the country.
Alla Pugacheva has met President Vladimir Putin several times, but has never openly supported him.
Political scientist Abbas Galiamov, a former speech writer for Putin, spoke of a “slap” in the Kremlin.
“If there are still important people in the country around whom there is a consensus, then of course Pugachiova is one of them,” Galyamov wrote on Telegram.
Pugacheva always stayed away from politics, he pointed out. Its sudden politicization may create a feeling in society, which the authorities may perceive as threatening, that “enough is enough”, emphasizes Galiamov,
