Seven members of the Islamic State jihadist organization and one member of the Hashd al-Shaabi (“Popular Mobilization Units”, officially part of the army) were killed yesterday Sunday in clashes in the Nineveh province of northern Iraq, the Iraqi paramilitary organization announced.

The hostilities broke out in an underground tunnel in the al-Hatra desert, southwest of the provincial capital of Mosul, according to a press release by Hashd al-Shaabi.

In addition to the death of one member of the Shiite paramilitaries, eight others were injured when IS suicide bombers detonated the explosives they were strapped with, according to the same source.

At the same time, Yahya Rasool, spokesman for the general staff of the Iraqi armed forces, said in a separate press release that an army helicopter destroyed a vehicle, killing three IS members who were on board during a reconnaissance operation in Nineveh.

Iraq declared “victory” over IS in 2017. But even after their military defeat, the jihadists continue to carry out deadly attacks in Iraq and neighboring Syria, in territory they have ravaged for years.

In recent months, Iraqi forces have been conducting operations to stem the escalation of jihadist activity.
