Ukrainian experts have so far exhumed 146 bodies, mostly civilians, from a mass grave near the city of Izyum in eastern Ukraine, and some of them show signs of violent death, the region’s governor said today.

According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, 450 people are believed to be buried at this site, in a forest on the outskirts of Izium.

Izium was recently recaptured by Ukrainian forces when they launched a counterattack in the Kharkiv region.

Oleh Sinekhubov, the governor of Kharkiv, said two children were among the bodies. “Some of the dead have signs of violent death. There are corpses with their hands tied and signs of torture. They were found to have injuries from explosions, shrapnel and knives,” he wrote in his Telegram post.

Earlier today, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed Ukrainian claims of “war crimes” in Izium as “lies.”

Local residents have previously said some of the graves in the forest belong to people killed in a Russian airstrike.
