Earthquake hits Mexico on anniversary of two other major quakes

by

On the same day that Mexico remembered two major earthquakes that hit the country in 1985 and 2017, a new tremor of 7.6 was recorded in the La Placita de Morelos region of the Pacific coast.

Residents of the capital, about 750 km away, felt buildings shake and took to the streets in search of protection. The earthquake was registered shortly after 1 pm local time (3 pm in Brasília), with an epicenter between the states of Michoacán and Colima, at a depth of 15 km.

Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said there were no reports of major damage to the city so far.

Geological services issued tsunami warning signals for some regions of the Mexican coast, with waves of 1 to 3 meters. From Guatemala to Ecuador, over a long stretch, earthquake reflexes are also expected, with the tide rising as high as 0.3 meters.

Mexico experienced moments of alarm with the memory of the earthquakes of September 19, 1985, which left thousands dead, and of 2017, when more than 350 people died.
