Erdogan reveals Putin’s plans for Ukraine: “He wants to end the war as soon as possible”

Speaking to the American network PBS, the Turkish president announced that there will soon be an “important step” and that there will be an exchange of 200 “hostages” between the two sides

His assessment that the Russian presidentVladimir Putin wishes to finish “as soon as possible” him war in Ukrainethe Turkish president expressed, Recep Tayyip Erdogan in an interview with the American television network PBS, revealing the plans of the Russian president for the war.

In particular, the Turkish president pointed out during the interview that he believes that the leader of Russia seeks to end the war in Ukraine and that it is expected to be an “important step” towards this direction.

“In fact, he showed me that he is willing to finish it as soon as possible,” said the Turkish president in particular and added: “That was my impression, because the way things are moving is quite problematic.”

He also indicated that an exchange of 200 “hostages” would soon take place between the two sides, however, he did not elaborate on who would be included in such a prisoner exchange.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan has repeatedly sought since the start of the war in Ukraine to take a mediating role by promoting a “balanced” stance on NATO member Turkey while opposing Western sanctions on Russia.

Also asked by PBS whether Russia should be allowed to keep any territory it has seized since February and whether this should be part of a peace deal, Mr Erdogan replied emphatically: “No, definitely not”. He also underlined that “invaded territories will be returned to Ukraine.”

For the Turkish economy

The Turkish president then referred to the Turkish economy. He said inflation was not an “insurmountable economic threat” adding that it would start to fall at the end of the year after rising to more than 80% in August.

“Inflation is not an insurmountable economic threat. I am an economist,” said Erdogan, who, however, has not studied economics.

Erdogan added that some countries are threatened by inflation of 8%-9%, while Turkey’s inflation is around 80%.

“The shelves are not empty in the markets in my country. But the shelves are empty even in the US, they are empty in France, they are empty in Germany. My citizens can find any type of product they want in the market,” Erdogan said, according to the text of his interview released by the Turkish presidency.
