Taliban fighters killed two women during a search of a house in southern Afghanistan, as announced by a representative of the local administration.

Since retaking power in August 2021, the Taliban have been regularly conducting house-to-house checks across the country, looking for weapons, common criminal law violators and dissidents.

On Sunday, Taliban searching a house in Lashkar Ga, the capital of Helmand province, fired into the air and they injured a woman, according to a local religious official. Two other women and a male relative decided to take the injured woman to the hospital.

“They were in a hurry. And, seeing them speeding away, the Taliban thought they were fleeing with weapons and opened fire on their car, killing the two women accompanying the injured woman.

Two men were also injured in the shooting.

Hafiz Rasheed, the head of the province’s Intelligence and Culture Service, confirmed to AFP that two women were killed “during a clearance operation in the Bost Kala zone”.

In recent days, the Taliban have stepped up patrols in Helmand and neighboring Kandahar province, their stronghold. Road checkpoints have been temporarily set up at major intersections in Kandahar and spot checks are being carried out on vehicles and their passengers.

“They even look in women’s wardrobes and clothes. What kind of research is this? These are not nice things,” commented a resident of Kandahar, whose house was searched today.

“They had to bring in a metal detector to find weapons, but they can’t search like that. They scattered everything and left,” added the woman, who asked not to be named.
