Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves uploaded a video of himself harassing a group of men on the street having a conversation
The NBA fined their point guard $40,000 Minnesota Timberwolves, Anthony Edwardsfor “offensive and derogatory language” he used on social media last week.
The 21-year-old used homophobic language in a video he posted, in which he captured a group of men on the street having a conversation. He used derogatory terms for them in the video, which appeared on Instagram Live and was later deleted before making its way to other social media sites.
“What I said was immature, offensive and disrespectful and I’m incredibly sorry”Edwards wrote in an apologetic statement posted on Twitter. “It is unacceptable for me or anyone to use that language in such an offensive way, there is no excuse for it. I grew up better than that!”he added.
However Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul Jabbar weighed in on the matter, stressing that Edwards’ apology wasn’t enough… “I don’t think an apology – however heartfelt – is enough,” he wrote on substack, adding: “Edwards needs to repair the damage with some volunteer community service with LGBTQ+ organizations, particularly youth groups, to show his support. If he can’t do that much to undo the damage he’s caused, then his apology is meaningless.”
