A school trip almost ended in tragedy when the school bus carrying 27 schoolgirls and 4 teachers collided with a lorry and plunged into a 50m ditch at Bacchus Marsh, in Melbourne’s north-west, in the early hours of Wednesday.

32 people were taken to hospital from the crash, with one teenage girl in a serious condition.
The students from Loreto College Ballarat Girls’ School were on their way to Melbourne Airport to fly to the US and visit NASA’s space camp at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
In addition to the teenager, the bus driver was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, while the other 26 students and the four adults were slightly injured.

“Everyone is fine. We had injuries, but there are no casualties,” the school spokeswoman said.
The exciting US trip the students were on included six nights at NASA Space Camp, two nights in Washington, D.C., a tour of the US Capitol building, lunch with an astronaut and a plane tour of the Florida Everglades.
The trip, which cost $7,700 per student, was previously canceled due to Covid restrictions.
Police urged parents to stay away from the scene of the crash.
