Where it goes, it goes: Russians book non-return tickets after the declaration of conscription

Google Trends data showed a large increase in searches for Aviasales, which is Russia’s most popular website for buying airline tickets.

Non-return flights from Russia are selling out fast today, after Russian President Vladimir Putin declared partial mobilization.

Her announcement immediate mobilization of 300,000 reservists by Putin in a televised address early this morning, sparked fears that men of fighting age will not be allowed to leave Russia.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said conscription would be limited to those with experience as professional soldiers and that students and those who had only served as draftees would not be called up.

However, Google Trends data showed a large increase in searches for Aviasales, which is Russia’s most popular website for buying airline tickets.

Direct flights from Moscow to Istanbul, Turkey, and Yerevan, Armenia, both visa-free destinations for Russians, were sold out today, according to Aviasales data.

Some non-stop flights, including those from Moscow to Tbilisi, were also unavailable, while the cheapest flights from the Russian capital to Dubai cost more than 300,000 rubles (about $5,000), about five times the average monthly salary in Russia.

Latvia, an EU member state that borders Russia, also announced today that it will not offer asylum to Russians who want to avoid conscription, as the country’s Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics announced in a message on Twitter, citing security reasons.
