MEPs describe the threat of using nuclear weapons as “a completely irresponsible and criminal act”

The head of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee condemns the holding of fake referendums in regions of Ukraine occupied by Russia, in a joint statement David McAllister (European People’s Party, Germany), the head of Parliament’s mission to the EU-Ukraine Parliamentary Association Committee Witold Waschikowski (European Conservatives and Reformists, Poland) and the Parliament’s rapporteur for Ukraine Michael Galler (EPP, Germany).

“We condemn in the strongest terms the declared intention of the de facto authorities in several regions of Ukraine illegally held by Russia to hold fake referendums on the integration of these regions into Russia. We consider the conduct and outcome of these so-called “referendums” to be legally invalid. We are also extremely concerned about the partial mobilization of the Russian armed forces announced by the Kremlin today,” the MEPs said in their joint statement. They also note that these moves by Russia amount to additional serious violations of international law, which “are going to lead to a further escalation of the already extremely dangerous situation caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the consequences of which will be unpredictable.” .

The MEPs therefore demand that the Russian Federation “refrain from any further escalation and recognize that the continuation of the unprovoked war against Ukraine will only lead to more suffering, as its alleged goals will never be achieved”. They also stress that “the EU’s support for Ukraine is unwavering and the EU will never give in to Russian blackmail”.

MEPs describe the threat of using nuclear weapons as “a completely irresponsible and criminal act”, the perpetrators of which will be held accountable before justice as well as by the citizens themselves.

Finally, they underline that the European Parliament reiterates its unwavering support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.
