One-way, non-returnable airline tickets are selling out in Russia and their prices have skyrocketed

The Baltic countries and members of the European Union Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, bordering Russia, they will not shelter Russians who want to avoid conscription, the foreign ministers of the three countries said today.

One-way, non-returnable plane tickets are selling out in Russia and their price soared after President Vladimir Putin announced in his morning address the partial call-up of 300,000 reservists.

“The refusal to perform one’s political duties in Russia, or the desire not to do so, is not a sufficient reason to be granted asylum in another country,” commented the Estonian foreign minister Urmas Reinsalou in an email sent to Reuters.

On Twitter, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Edgars Rinkevics, cited security reasons for this refusal. Lithuania’s interior ministry clarified that each asylum application will be considered individually.

The three countries and Poland began expelling Russian citizens from their borders at midnight on Monday, arguing that they cannot travel while their country is at war with Ukraine. Exempt from the ban are Russian dissidents seeking asylum in the EU, truck drivers, refugees, those who live permanently in EU countries and those who want to visit relatives.
