Why is Putin wringing his hands if the far-right coalition wins?

The dissolving trends in Europe they only favor Moscow. After the polls in Sweden, which highlighted the extreme right as the second largest force, tomorrow there will be a “draw” for Italy as well. Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy) of Georgia Meloni the Lega, under Mr. Matteo Salviniand his Forza Italia Silvio Berlusconi they show, until September 9 when the last polls were published, that they gather a percentage that reaches 44%. On the center left, the Democratic Party under Enrico Leta it is expected to gather around 21%, while with the help of its partners the coalition (Greens and Left Alliance, More Europe and Civic Commitment) is estimated to reach up to 28%. The Five Star Movement was counted at just over 14% raising its rates.

With these data, Georgia Meloni may be the new prime minister of the country from Monday. She has not changed her party’s emblem (it is similar to that of Benito Mussolini) but she has significantly softened her criticism of the EU, presenting a more moderate profile. She claims that the Italian right has left fascism behind for decades, but the progressive forces are not convinced. However, the fact that for two weeks no measurements have been carried out (they are prohibited by the country’s legislation) and that there are still many undecideds in Italy gives scope for a surprise on Sunday night.

Why is Putin wringing his hands if the far-right coalition wins? Matteo Salvini has been positioned from the start against sanctions on Russia, while yesterday the third in the coalition, Silvio Berlusconi, was placed in his favor. Meloni may have maintained a stance of neutrality, but the prospect of electing a government in Italy that does not show a clear negative stance on the invasion of Ukraine will be a good development for Vladimir Putin. Of course, the worst is yet to come for Europe itself. The third largest economy of the old continent will now be an unpredictable interlocutor in the “27” at a time when consensus and prudence are needed in order to tackle the energy crisis. In contrast, the head of the Democratic party, Enrico Letta, who served as prime minister from 2013 to 2014, has a moderate, pro-European stance and is strongly opposed to Putin and the war in Ukraine. Europe, however, seems to be preparing for the new wave of the extreme right that threatens to appear. Ursula von der Leyen stated that there are safety valves in Europe against the far right.

It is recalled that after the 2020 referendum, the number of parliamentary seats has decreased. Italians will elect 400 deputies as opposed to 630. The number of senators has also been reduced, from 315 to 200. And this difference in arithmetic creates new data, clouding the landscape for the final result. The economic and energy crisis, inflated bills, accuracy, the war in Ukraine, the environment, immigration, but also the rights of LGBTI people are the main stakes of the election.
