Three arrests have been made.
Belgium’s Justice Minister Vincent Van Kickernborn’s security has been stepped up following the arrest in the Netherlands of three people linked to a “serious threat” against the Belgian government official.
According to the Flemish-language newspaper Het Laatste Niews, firearms were found in a car with Dutch license plates which was spotted outside the minister’s home in the suburb of Courtret.
The federal prosecutor’s office in Belgium did not confirm this information, but spoke of a “serious threat”. In its announcement, it clarified that three persons were arrested on the night of Friday to Saturday in the Netherlands and their extradition to Belgium has been requested.
Prosecutors said they were told last week of a “possible” threat against Kikernborn and the preliminary investigation found it “should be taken seriously”.
The minister will not participate in some scheduled activities in the “next few days”.
The prosecutor’s office did not provide any further details about the ongoing investigation.
