Iranian news agencies reported today that 739 protesters, including 60 women, have been arrested in Gilan province in the Caspian region.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raishi said today that the authorities must “resolutely deal with those who oppose the security and tranquility of the country”, Iranian state media reported.
The Iranian president’s comments came during a condolence call to the family of a security guard who was stabbed, according to authorities, by angry protesters.
For a week now, protests have been organized in several Iranian cities over the death of Mahsha Amini, a young woman who died after being arrested by the morality police.
The president “stressed that it is necessary to separate the protests from the disruption of public order and security and characterized the events (…) as an attitude”, according to the media.
Iranian news agencies reported today that 739 protesters, including 60 women, have been arrested in Gilan province, in the Caspian region. The activist Twitter account 1500tasvir, which has 125,000 “followers”, said it had lost contact with the northwestern Iranian city of Osnavieh.
Osnavieh was one of several towns in northwestern Iran, where the Kurds live, that went on strike on Friday. The Kurdish human rights group Hengaw posted a video it says shows protesters taking control of parts of the city.
Reuters was unable to verify the authenticity of this video.
