The passage of typhoon Noru from the Philippines was devastating, leaving behind five dead and incalculable damages.

Authorities say five rescue workers have died in the San Miguel region, north of the capital Manila, and millions of homes remain flooded and without power. According to San Miguel disaster official Renan Herrera, the five rescuers may have drowned due to rising water levels.

The area was among those hit hard by Typhoon Noru, with some residents trapped on the roofs of their homes while others scrambled to carry their supplies.

The typhoon produced gusts of up to 240 km/h (149 mph) in Luzon City.

Noru initially made landfall as a super typhoon, but weakened later Sunday night. By tonight, the typhoon is expected to have left the Philippines.

Nearly 75,000 people were forced to leave their homes ahead of Noro’s arrival as forecasters warned against the risk of flooding in vulnerable areas.

“I think maybe we got lucky, at least this time,” Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos said during a briefing on Monday. “I think it’s clear from what we’ve done these last two days, the preparation we’ve done has been very important,” he added.

The Philippine president also ordered supplies to be flown in and cleanup equipment provided to communities hardest hit by the typhoon.
