File photo – September 27, 1937: Hitler and Mussolini together in Berlin

A file photo published – like today – by the Associated Press looks alarmingly timely.

In the recent Italian elections, victory was secured by the “Center-Right Alliance”, with the far-right “Brothers of Italy” of Giorgia Meloni as the first party, with a percentage of 26.44%. Meloni’s party is considered post-fascist, heavily influenced by Mussolini, and its victory caused great reflection and concern in the EU.

A file photo published today by the Associated Press seems alarmingly timely as – after Italy – the extreme right threatens Germany.

German Chancellor Adolf Hitler, right, and Italian Fascist leader Benito Mussolini stand in the back of a car and greet crowds on the streets of Berlin, heading from the Heerstrasse station to the Hindenburg Palace, September 27, 1937.

“Nearly 750,000 people gathered along the route to cheer the two leaders by shouting ‘Heil’ and giving Nazi salutes,” reads the photo’s summary.

Fascist Benito Mussolini ruled Italy from 1922 to 1943 and was an ally of Adolf Hitler, leading his country as an Axis power into World War II.
