“China has taken note of the latest developments in the situation in Ukraine” and “our position” is “clear and firm: namely that the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries must be respected,” Zhang Jun said.

China’s ambassador to the United Nations has renewed his call to the Security Council to respect “the territorial integrity of all countries”, following referendums on the annexation of four regions of Ukraine into the Russian Federation, seven months after Russian troops invaded its neighboring country.

“China has taken note of the latest developments in the situation in Ukraine” and “our position” is “clear and firm: namely that the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries must be respected,” Zhang Jun said.

The ambassador of Beijing, which is often accused by the West of offering political support to Russia, added that Moscow’s further isolation and the imposition of sanctions would lead to “an impasse”.

“The conflict between bloc countries, political isolation, sanctions and pressure will only lead to a stalemate,” Mr. Zhang said.

He reiterated the Chinese leadership’s call for negotiations to take into account the “legitimate concerns” of the warring parties to end the war that broke out on February 24.
