EU: Sabotaging Nord Stream disasters – We are taking security measures for the network

by

“We will support any investigation aimed at full clarity about what happened and why,” the European official said.

The European Union is deeply concerned about pipeline damage Nord Stream 1 and 2, which resulted in leaks in the international waters of the Baltic Sea, highlights the EU High Representative Joseph Borel.

In a statement issued on behalf of the EU, it points out that “all available information indicates that these leaks are result of deliberate action. We will support any investigation aimed at full clarity on what happened and why, and we will further measures to increase our resilience in energy security”.

At the same time, he notes that “safety and environmental concerns are of the highest priority. These incidents are not random and concern us all.”

“The damage to Nord Stream 1 and 2 it’s not a coincidence after all. Any deliberate disruption of the European energy infrastructure is completely unacceptable and will be met with a strong and united response,” concludes Josep Borrell.

Fears of attacks on the European energy grid after the sabotage

Fears of attacks on the European energy grid are being voiced in European capitals after gas pipelines were sabotaged. Analysts estimate that the sabotages are probably “warning shots” by Moscow, which has fallen into a desperate position on the Ukraine front, after Western support in Kyiv. It is noted that normally the pressure inside the pipeline equals 105 bar, while now it is only 7 bar in the German section.

The president of the Commission attributed the leaks in the Nord Stream 1 natural gas pipeline to sabotage Ursula von der Leyen, warning that there would be the “strongest possible response” in the event of attacks on Europe’s energy infrastructure.

“I spoke with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen about the acts of sabotage on the Nord Stream pipelines,” Ms von der Leyen tweeted.

He added that it is now paramount to investigate the incidents to get full clarity on “the facts and why”.

“Any deliberate disruption to Europe’s energy infrastructure is unacceptable and will lead to the strongest possible response,” he warned.

Natural gas prices in Europe rose 12% during Tuesday’s trading on the London market to $1,950 per 1,000 cubic meters.

Spoke to @Statsmin Frederiksen on the sabotage action #Nordstream.

Paramount to now investigate the incidents, get full clarity on events & why.

Any deliberate disruption of active European energy infrastructure is unacceptable & will lead to the strongest possible response.

It is recalled that the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which consists of two parallel lines capable of transporting 27.5 billion cubic meters per year each, began supplying gas directly from Russia to Germany in 2011. The operation of the pipeline Nord Stream 1 stopped altogether in early September, as Russia cited first a technical pump failure at a Russian compressor station and then Western sanctions, while Nord Stream 2 was not given the go-ahead at the last minute due to Russian sanctions.

The German government received the CIA tip over the summer, Spiegel reported, adding that Berlin suspects a targeted attack on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines. A German government spokesman declined to comment, Spiegel added.
