A manuscript of his verses David Bowie for his 1972 song ‘Starman’ sold at auction for £200,000.
The song was included on his fifth album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, which catapulted the musician onto the international rock and pop scene.
Initially, the manuscript of Bowie’s lyrics was estimated to fetch up to £40,000, but no one expected the price to go that high.
Olivier Varenne, director of purchases and collections at the Museum of Old and New Art in Tasmania, Australia, was the highest bidder on behalf of a private collector.
Paul Fairweather, from Omega Auctions, said: “We have had unprecedented interest from around the world in this historic piece. We had five phone lines running for the sale as well as online and in-room bidders.”
In 2019, the great David Bowie’s first demo sold for £51,000 after sitting forgotten and dusty in an attic for almost five decades.
