The transfer of the title to William reignited resentment among some in Wales who feel it should belong to a Welshman, something that has happened since 1282
Prince William, accompanied by his wife Kate, made his first trip to Wales since assuming the title of ‘Prince of Wales’, which his father Charles held until his abdication, on Tuesday.
The visit came after the royal family ended mourning – until Monday night – for Elizabeth II, who died on September 8.
The transfer of the title to William – until previously the Duke of Cambridge – reignited resentment from some in Wales who feel it should belong to a Welshman, something that has happened since 1282.
In the space of three weeks, more than 35,000 signatures were collected to strip Prince William of the title, calling it “an insult to Wales and a symbol of historical oppression”.
