The National Weather Service predicts the core of the hurricane will have moved over central Florida by Wednesday afternoon.

Florida residents are bracing up as Category 4 Hurricane Ian approaches the state after leaving Cuba without power as the country’s entire power grid went down.

Many businesses in Florida have closed and officials have ordered 2.5 million people to evacuate. The National Weather Service predicts the core of the hurricane will move over central Florida by Wednesday afternoon.

Winds have already strengthened to around 250km/h, although they are expected to gradually weaken as the typhoon makes landfall.

The typhoon hit western Cuba on Tuesday, bringing gale force winds and flooding that affected infrastructure and destroyed some of the country’s most important tobacco farms.

Earlier, the typhoon reached Cuba’s Pinar del Rio province where officials set up 55 shelters, evacuated 50,000 people and took measures to protect crops in the country’s main tobacco-producing region. The storm left at least two dead in western Cuba, state media reported.
