The first trailer of the documentary Specter about the late American record producer and convicted murderer, Phil Spector, has been released by Showtime and Sky.
As announced, the series will focus mainly on Phil Spector’s involvement in the murder of actress Lana Clarkson, for which he was convicted in 2009.
It will feature archival material from the music producer himself, as well as newly recorded interviews with people close to both him and Clarkson.
“He didn’t like being alone, he had a fear of abandonment,” the trailer says of his personality, and it’s claimed that “Phil Spector enjoyed bringing people into his house and locking them in.”
Elsewhere in the documentary it is stated that he “had nothing to do with Clarkson’s death”.
An official synopsis for the docu-series, directed by Sheena M. Joyce and Don Argot, notes that “in light of this infamous crime and the hysterical media circus that followed, the four episodes reveal the story of both Clarkson and the man who was convicted of her murder.”
The music producer, whose ‘Wall of Sound’ style revolutionized the way rock music was recorded in the early 1960s, died in January aged 81 of complications from Covid-19 in prison, where he was serving a 19-year sentence .
“As groundbreaking as his achievements at the studio were, they were overshadowed by his 2009 conviction for murdering the actress,” a Rolling Stone report said.
The documentary will be shown in November in the UK.
