Nord Stream: Swedish Security Service takes over investigation into suspected pipeline sabotage

by

Säpo will handle the investigation because “there is a possibility that it is related to a serious crime which – at least in part – may be directed against Sweden’s national interests”

THE Swedish Security Service (Säpo) announced today that it has undertaken a preliminary investigation into suspected sabotage that caused the gas pipeline leaks Nord Stream 1 and 2 in the Baltic Sea.

As stated in a related announcement, Säpo will handle the investigation because “there is a possibility that it is related to a serious crime, which – at least in part – may be directed against Sweden’s national interests” and “the involvement of a foreign power cannot be ruled out.”

Both Washington and Moscow today denied responsibility for suspected sabotage that caused three leaks at the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, two undersea natural gas pipelines linking Russia to Germany. The three spills occurred in international waters, but two were in the Danish Exclusive Economic Zone and one in the Swedish EEZ.

Although the pipelines were not in operation, they were filled with natural gas, which is leaking into the southern Baltic.
