Erdogan announces that he will strengthen the Turkish military presence in occupied Cyprus

The president of Turkey described the US government’s decision as “inexplicable”, both in terms of “its content” and the “moment of time”.

Turkey will strengthen its military presence in occupied Cyprus, following the US decision to completely lift the embargo on arms sales to the Republic of Cyprus, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in an interview he gave Wednesday night to CNN Türk.

The president of Turkey described the US government’s decision as “inexplicable”, both in terms of “its content” and the “moment of time”.

A few days ago, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced the lifting of the embargo on arms sales to the Republic of Cyprus in fiscal year 2023.

“The United States – which overlooks, even encourages, the steps of the Cyprus-Greece duo, which threatens peace and stability in the eastern Mediterranean – will lead to an arms race on the island with this action,” Erdogan said.

“Are we going to sit idly by? We can’t”, he emphasized and added that Turkey already has 40,000 soldiers on the island and will strengthen its military presence there. “Everyone should know that this last step will not go unanswered and that every precaution will be taken for the safety of Turkish Cypriots,” added the president of Turkey.
